You could spare a thought for the Saint that this day all started for. Saint Valentine, patron of lovers, who was believed to be murdered on 14 Feb back in AD270. The Roman Emperor Claudius II at the time renounced all marriages and engagements within the army. He didn’t want emotion clouding his men’s judgement in battle. However, St Valentine ignored his request still conducted marriages. Unfortunately he was found out and sentenced to a very horrible death. It is rumoured he left a note for the jailer’s daughter ‘Love from your Valentine’, supposedly the first Valentine card.
